IS THIS YOUR YEAR?
I like to start every year with, "THIS IS MY YEAR" and then I like to follow it with a list of the hardest damn shit ever; like:
I'm going to hit the gym 5 days a week at 4:30am.
I'm going to start running again.
I'm going to measure everything I eat in grams - because that is the coolest way to do it.
I'm going to organize my life.
I'm going to have zero debt.
I'm going to read a new book every week - not fiction but meaningful NON-FICTION and on self-improvement and ways to better my life.
I'm going to ... BLAH, BLAH, BLAH...this list is nearly endless. I found myself being torchered by my January lists year after year And they ALL have the same theme - ME ME ME. What I'm going to do do. Or maybe even one better, it's a list of all the things that I'm embarrassed that I don't do or feel that I can't do. When you look at this list of things that I wish I had time to do in addition to my full time job and giant family - Who has time to do all these things? Why do I think I can do all these things?
A BETTER LIST
Maybe we should all ban together as women and make a better list for 2021. A list that celebrates ourselves. A list that reminds us to LOVE and VALUE ourselves. Maybe a great 2021 list should be more like:
I will pray more for patience, kindness and love for myself and the people I love and care about more.
I will practice self care daily - even if it's 5 small minutes of quiet time to gather my thoughts.
I will plan my day more efficiently. That plan will include time for myself, my partner, my children and my job - in that order.
I will look in the mirror with kinder eyes.
I WILL LOOK IN THE MIRROR WITH KINDER EYES.
Let's be honest, this one takes practice. Being a woman in this western first world civilization is hard. Everyone is always coming at you with how you are supposed to look and dress and feel about the world. They never take into account that we are all 100% different. It's hard not to take a good look in that mirror every day and see every new wrinkle, gray hair or stretch mark. At 45, it feels like nothing is on my body where it's supposed to be. And thoughts like that are self defeating. And I'm NOT going to do it anymore.
I start my day being grateful for this body that is carrying me through this life that I love. I am proud of my smile lines because I love to laugh and I love to be surrounded with people who make me happy and who I make happy. I'm trying not to control the things that I cannot control so my WTF lines with tame the hell down. And I'm trying to eat foods that makes me feel good. I'm praying daily for patience and kindness and love. But more importantly, I'm making time for ME. It's hard to find that time. For me, I find it at 5:30am. I have the entire house to myself. It's quiet. There is really good coffee. And I can be alone with my thoughts and plans for my day.
